Fabulous French Traditions During The Month of May
May is a month full of cultural and traditional significance in France and this weekend also marks an historical event back in the UK as King Charles III is officially crowned King. Luckily, we will be able to follow the celebrations of this monumental occasion from a distance and enjoy all the pomp and ceremony from France. Across the water here in France, May is a month of several national holidays and celebrations, here are
a few of them –
May 1st French Bank Holiday :
One of the most notable traditions in France during May is the celebration of Labour Day or May Day (Fête du travail) on May 1st. It is a public holiday, and people usually give bouquets of lily of the valley (muguet) to friends and loved ones as a symbol of good luck and prosperity. There are also organized demonstrations and marches in many cities in France, organized by trade unions and political parties.
Cannes Film Festival :
May is also the month of the Cannes Film Festival, which is held annually on the French Riviera. It is one of the most prestigious film festivals in the world, where filmmakers, actors, and celebrities come together to showcase their latest works and celebrate the art of cinema. The festival usually takes place during the second or third week of May and lasts for 12 days.
Museum Night :
Another important cultural event in May is the Nuits des Musées (Museum Night), which takes place on the third Saturday of the month. It is a night where many museums across the country open their doors to visitors for free, allowing them to discover France's rich artistic and cultural heritage.
Tennis :
May is also the month of the French Open tennis tournament, which is held annually in Paris at the end of the month. It is one of the four Grand Slam tournaments in the world, and it attracts the best tennis players from around the world to compete in the Roland Garros Stadium.
Ascension :
May is the month of the Ascension Day (l'Ascension), a Christian holiday that celebrates the ascension of Jesus Christ into heaven. It is a public holiday in France, and many people use the day off to travel and spend time with their families.
