How The Gendarmes Can Keep An Eye Out On Your Home When You Are Away
Opération Tranquillité Vacances
This is a free service where the gendarmerie/police keep an eye on your house in France whilst you’re away. They undertake to patrol regularly to check on your home several times a day (over the week and weekend) to make sure everything is ok.
If they have any concerns, see any damage or evidence of an attempted break-in or burglary, they will alert you (or a trusted friend/neighbour nominated by you) - this means you can act quickly to limit any damage (eg. replacing locks, claiming through insurance.
If you wish to use this service, you need to make your request no later than 48 hours before your trip. To make a request, you need to attend your local police station in person (don’t forget to take proof of identity, proof of address eg. recent utility bill), and from this summer, on-line requests will be possible. To use the on-line service, you will need your FranceConnect account (you may have already set this up in order to access the Impots/tax or Ameli/healthcare sites). You’ll need to provide dates of when you’ll be away, how your home can be accessed during that time and contact details in case of an issue (obviously the more information you provide, the easier it is for the police to keep your home safe). Once submitted, you’ll receive a receipt and summary of your submission and your request will then be sent to the local Gendarmerie based on your location. If you have any problems connecting and submitting your request online, there is also the option to print the form which you can complete at home and take into your local police station.
